Competition ‘Jonge Architecten Aan Zet’ (IJzer & Zee) for 48 apartments for elderly in collaboration with UW architecten location : Nieuwpoort, BE | year : 2013 | surface : 3500m2

The question for new forms of community, especially for the older age groups, is becoming more and more relevant. Close to the centre of Nieuwpoort, along the Belgian coast, a residential care facility is expanded with 48 apartments for elderly people. Introducing a medium scale, which mediates between the town centre and the rest home, the project consists of a series of volumes forming a collective backyard. The blocks are divided in two typologies according to age (+65 and +75) which differs by the type of circulation provided: a compact core for the +65 and an oversized collective circulation for the +75. These collective spaces, materialized as glazed volumes between the apartment blocks in bricks or pigmented concrete, aim to stimulate social interactions among the dwellers and to ultimately express their activity on the square.
