The single-family house is part of a garden suburb developed in the 1950s around Georges Golinvaux Square in Auderghem. The terraced house originally had a compact configuration and lacked a direct relationship with the garden, located one level below the ground floor.
The renovation is driven by the ambition to strengthen the connection between the living spaces and the outdoors. A double-height space is created at the garden side. Steel beams and columns replaced the removed structural floor. The kitchen and dining area are organised in direct relation to the garden, while the living room on the ground floor with visual connection to the garden benefits from the quality of the double-height space.
As part of a typical garden suburb, the street façade of the house is renovated in a conservative way, retaining the original painted brickwork and wooden window frames. At the garden façades a roof extensions manifests itself, creating space for an additional room and further enhanced living comfort.
The renovation demonstrates how precise interventions can significantly improve spacial en living qualities while preserving the character of the original architecture. Strengthening the relationship between inside and o, increasing spatial openness, and optimising the lower floor, the compact terraced house transforms into a contemporary and comfortable family home while remaining part of the homogeneous scenography of the garden suburb.
