This single-family house in a 1970s garden suburb on the outskirts of Hasselt combines simple geometric shapes.
A high concrete ring beam rests on several massive masonry elements and defines the ground-floor plan. The massive elements, charged with functions (storage space, entrance hall, bench seating, etc.), are alternated with floor-to-ceiling windows that give a view of the green surroundings. In the living area, the changing bearing direction of the exposed wooden latticework and a seating well create subtle zoning in the open plan.
Central in the ground-floor plan sits a closed volume/cube with 2 floors. It contains technical rooms on the ground floor and 2 bedrooms and bathroom on the first floor. The different floor heights in and around the closed volume result in a horizontal articulation of the house.
The house is conceived as a compact house designed for evolution, in which a bedroom and bathroom can be organised at ground level.
In harmony with the other houses in the neighbourhood, a white brick is used for the masonry. Excess joint mortar is spread onto the bricks during bricklaying, smoothing out textures and sharpening corners. The uniform brickwork is combined with elements in concrete with visible aggregates; a floor finish in grinded concrete and beams in washed-out concrete.
